I know once I get to Europe everything is going to be new and challenging but I believe that I will be able to climb the mountain and get to the top! Maybe when I come back I will be able to speak a new language .. fluently?! I also have been trying to think of ideas for fundraisors if you have any perfect ideas for me please comment on my post! Thanks for reading and I hope to see more contributors I will even be contributing to my ChipIn! myself because I am going to work hard for my opportunity to travel abroad!

Journey to Europe

Who? Hello, my name is Maurie McCray and I am from Wiggins, Mississippi. I am a Sophomore at Stone High School. Recently, I applied to go abroad next year, my junior year, to Italy or possibly Sweden I have not made a solid decision yet. To study abroad, learn, and interact with other cultures through the American Field Service (AFS) intercultural student exchange program.I find it important to travel because you cannot learn certain things by sitting in your backyard, so with this opportunity I hope to leave my small town in Stone County for a time in hopes to gain a new perspective, new friends, and a new home.

Where? In Italy or Sweden, I will be attending a high school, to socialize, and learn much as I can of the language and culture. I have always wanted to go to leave the United States to see different parts of the world. Going to spend a year in a different country studying with different types of people, and learning different things would broaden my view of the world and the people that inhabit it. I’m so excited about this opportunity because it will be that first step to many more traveling adventures to come..

Who again? As a sophomore, I am very focused on school, my friends, and my job with the local paper. Didn't I tell you that I have a j.o.b.! The last two years! I am a column writer for my towns local newspaper, Stone County Enterprise.  The column name being “You(th) Talk” discusses the happenings that goes on in our high school to keep parents and students updated. I am also in my second year of the BETA club which recognizes students for academic achievement. This year, I did step out of my box, went for an outdoor sport and joined 4-H's Mississippi Extension Program Shooting Club. My sport is the compound bow. Besides my schoolwork my family, friends, music, and getting involved into new things are basically my every day life.

My family is really behind me, especially my mom. Even now after being in a bad car accident and subsequently losing her job, she believes in the service to others. She is continually looking for work like many of our neighbors and helps out all around our town with Red Cross and the Food Pantry. I have volunteered with Habitat for Humanities helping rebuild homes in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina.

What? I am going to need extra help, but even through these tough times my mother is devoted to making my dream of traveling come true. My family and me are working very hard saving money for the trip and also going to try to begin planning some fundraisers.  I am not lazy and am willing to work hard. Hopefully, I will be able to raise enough money for this great experience of a lifetime, so my goal to raise is $8,000! I want to thank you for taking interest in my blog and reading about my future hopes and dreams. Whatever you are able to give is greatly appreciated. No amount is too small. I know that times are tough, but every little bit will help me get a step closer. Click on the ChipIn! gadget on the top right of this blog to help me with my journey, by making a secure non tax-deductible donation. I would greatly appreciate it if you could forward my blog to anyone else who you think might be interested in sponsoring my AFS experience by forwarding the links.

Thank you very much,
Maurie McCray
